Further Fields FAQ

In many areas of Modulus you can add your own fields to store additional information if those provided with the system are insufficient for your requirements. These are termed Further Fields.

SETTING UP

Further Fields are set up in the Data Manager, using the Further Fields item in the Settings section of the Core menu.

First, select the File to which you wish to add Further Fields using the File pop-up towards the top left of the screen. Double-click on items in the list to edit, or use the [+] button to add new Further Fields.

For new Further Fields, specify a Field Name (up to 31 characters), a Field Type and, if necessary, a List or Format. The Field Type will be determined by the nature of the information to be stored in the Further Field. Choose from A (alphanumeric, up to 31 characters), T (text, of unlimited length), N (real number or integer) and D (date). If choosing A or T, you can specify an options list that will prompt users when making entries to the field. Enter the name of the list in the List or Format column. If choosing N or D, you can specify a format in the same column.

ENTERING INFORMATION

When it is necessary to view or modify the information contained within any Further Fields that have been set up, use the [Further Fields] button which is the bottom right-hand button of the Buttons Palette. This can be used from an imput layout, when the information pertaining to the record on screen will be displayed, or from a listing screen, when the information displayed will be that pertaining to the record in the list that has been highlighted.

To edit a field, click on the appropriate row. If there is already an entry, that will be highlighted and will be overwritten as soon as you start typing. Then, use Return or Tab to move down through the list. If you need to insert characters into an existing entry, double-click at the appropriate point in that entry. The only exception to this is that double-clicking on a Further Field of Type Text will open an Expanded Text window in which you can edit the text more easily.

To return to the parent record, press [Tick] orto save changes, or [X] to revert to saved.

SEARCHING

To search for information held in Further Fields, click the [Further Fields] button in the Buttons Palette when the More Choices window is on screen.
